FAQs

Doesn’t Outreach Internet do the same thing?

Definitely. Outreach is a great group, and if you like their offering, by all means, stick with them! Applegate.Network is taking advantage of some brand new rules passed by the FCC to offer state-of-the-art equipment to a limited group of people. Applegate.Network will be newer and faster, but I’m definitely the new kid on the block. It’s up to you to decide. But let me set up a trial dish at your place - I bet you’ll like the results.

Will you offer phone and TV service like Spectrum?

No, this is just an internet connection. If you want to ditch your phone bill, there are some VERY good internet phone providers and the equipment Applegate.Network is providing does have a phone jack. Let’s get things stable and if you’re interested, let me know.

As for TV, I suggest YouTube TV or HULU+Live TV. Both services provide local channels, plus cable networks like ESPN.

What about customer service? It’s just you, right?

For now, yes, it’s just me. To make this possible, I am hoping that everyone will allow me to install a Cambrium Networks Home Router in their homes. This little box will provide you with Wired and WiFi connections. It has the advantage that I can diagnose many problems from my desk.

But I’m also used to flying rockets, so I’ll have plenty of systems in place that should identify problems BEFORE they affect you.

I am also looking at providing additional tech support (for home TV, Windows, and all other tech) via a company like HelloTech. This would be an additional fee.

What about privacy? Are you going to watch what I’m doing online?

“No” is the short answer.

The long answer: I care a lot about preserving people’s privacy online. I’m still researching which laws I’ll be required to uphold. As an Internet Service Provider, I might be required to maintain certain records for law enforcement, for example. And I may have to monitor your connection as part of troubleshooting issues with the system, especially in the beginning. But using secure sites or Virtual Private Networks ensure that no-one on the Internet, including me, can see what you are doing online. But it’s a complicated issue, and I’ll see if I can find some links here.

Tell me about your plans for collecting fees.

I’ve selected an online billing system from VISP.net. It allows you as users to set up recurring payments, pay via check or credit card - all the things one expects from a real company. It’s tied into the system, so as long as your account is current, you’ll have Internet. If you ever want to, you can suspend your service and come back when you want, no penalty. Basically, I don’t want to be THAT GUY, coming to your door asking for donations or bugging you about “not paying your share.”

Do you use IPv6? Can I get a static IP Address? Are you double NATing? What’s the quality of service guarantee?

Drop me a line to info@applegate.network. We can geek out about any of these advanced features. But we’ll be pretty barebones in the beginning out of necessity.

What’s the long term plan for Applegate.Network?

For this to be truly successful, Applegate.Network will have to soon move past the one-person shop. We’ll probably have to grow a bit. That means branching outside of our little valley to the Greater Applegate Metropolitan Area, offering service to more valleys. That will let me hire a tech or two, and let Applegate.Network exist without me.
